The Department of Environment operates a small Terrestrial Ecology Unit, which deals with the protection of biodiversity in the Cayman Islands, on behalf of the Cayman Islands Government.
Our work includes:
- Protected areas and protected species
- Compliance with the Animals Law and objectives of the draft National Conservation Law
- Public education and outreach
- Implementation of the National Biodiversity Action Plan (NBAP)
- Biological survey, scientific research and Visiting Scientist Programme, maintaining scientific collections (e.g. insectarium, herbarium)
- Working with local and international institutions and volunteers
